Meet Andy Sheeks: UX Director
Andy Sheeks was earning his Master of Architecture when he created his first website to showcase his architectural portfolio. It was then that he realized his passion for design could be better executed in the tech space. “The pace is so much more exciting,” says Andy. “It takes a long time to design and construct a building, but here, you can create something new every day.” Read on to learn more about Andy’s career path, the Hollywood star that would play him in a movie, and the time he saved a life.
Emily: Besides our founder, you’re the longest tenured employee at Talmetrix! Tell us about your journey at Talmetrix so far.
Andy: When I started, Talmetrix was four employees working at one table in an office that we split with another company. It was pretty cramped quarters, and the heat didn’t always work. A highlight for me was when we won ‘Awesome New Startup’ at HR Tech Conference for a project that I was the development lead on. That’s when I got really excited about where we could go with this, as well as where the HR technology space opened up for me personally. I started as a Developer and am now our UX Director.
I’ve always been very interested in designing and making and building things – ever since I started with Legos. What I really enjoy about UX is that you get to wear both hats – that of a developer and of a designer.
Emily: Tell us about your first job.
Andy: When I was a teenager, I lifeguarded at nearby lake. I saved a young child from drowning on my second day on the job. For the next 3 years, I just sat there and got sunburnt.
Emily: If you could drop everything and leave for a trip today, where are you going?
Andy: Florence, Italy is my absolute favorite place in the world. I would go there.
Emily: What actor would play the lead role in a movie about your life?
Andy: Meryl Streep. I mean, she’s incredible…
Emily: What’s one of your favorite things to do outside work?
Andy: I’ve gotten really good at jay-walking. In fact, I haven’t been ticketed since 2006.
Emily: What ingredients make the perfect pizza?
Andy: All the meats!
Emily: Similar to how we combine two words to create Talmetrix (talent and metrics) – what two words do you think should be combined for daily use?
Andy: Burbulence – it’s when you experience turbulence whilst flying over a suburb.
Emily: What would you choose as your superpower?
Andy: Definitely time travel. I had a really good ham sandwich last week, so I’d go back in time so I could eat that again.
